Teaching Philosophy

Photography is a very contemporary medium. In the last twenty years it has become the most vibrant of fine arts.  Due to the internet, both commercial and fine art photography have grown in stature.

In my photography classes, we work together to understand the photographs made in the classroom as well as images by well-known artists/photographers.  We incorporate diverse views of art, culture and society to help us understand what is presented before us.

My assignments are a place to begin. They are both specific and open ended.  They are specific enough to help guide the students in exploring their own vision, and to encompass technical ideas. They are open-ended, so not to reduce work to mere expression of technique.  Students are expected to explore the assignments and make them their own.  Through in-depth critiques we learn to control the medium and communicate more directly to the viewer.

I combine encouragement with a strict discipline for quality. Expression takes precedence in the classroom, technique is second.  Perfection of craft becomes important as students find it helps them communicate more readily.
