I am an instructor who believes that students should find their own artistic voice. I encourage this through providing them with historical and technical examples then pushing their limits with materials or means of execution they may have not considered. I want to see them experiment while building on the foundation I present to them. I let them know that it is ok to fail in certain aspects because in that failure you are driven to learn more. As my student, I want them to believe in what they are beginning to develop as young artists. I never want to see them create what I would expect. I never want them to do what they think they “should” be doing. I keep my classroom in a casual atmosphere to make them feel comfortable to explore, ask questions, discuss their thoughts. I do however expect my students to act responsibly as I do expect the highest quality of work and presentation and move at a rigorous pace. I expect the utmost respect and professionalism in my group critiques. I encourage students to present themselves in an informed manner. During these critiques, I often suggest different artists as well as different art forms (various visual art mediums as well as theater, film, even dance and music) for inspiration. I want students to believe in their work and value their role as a young artist.
